My First CrossFit Experience

I shook my head at people who had done CrossFit before. “That’s Crazy” I thought. I liked working out, but didn’t think I would like that. Then slowly it became a fad and I didn’t want to do it just because everyone else was doing it. I hate it when people do stuff just because its a “fad”. The problem was I couldn’t argue with the results. I’ve known a lot of people get into great shape using CrossFit. Plus, Bob Harper does CrossFit. And I love Bob Harper.

When the 60 Day Fat Loss Challenge came up through my work I knew thats what I would have to do to take my workouts to the next level. After getting some sobering results from my DXA scan I was even more determined to hit it hard.

We know some people who have a box about 15 minutes away (Check out CrossFit O’Fallon if you’re in the area, it’s great!) So Saturday morning Mr Dreamer went to the 7am class and I went to the 9am class. I have to admit I was a little nervous about it. But excited too. I enjoy working out on my own, but I liked the energy everyone had, plus a little friendly competition never hurts, right?


There was one other girl there for her first day also. I was glad I wasn’t alone! We started with a warm up… wait for it… Here is the WARM UP…

3 rounds of:
10 Squats
10 Second Squat Stretch
10 Second Sampson Stretch
10 Push Ups
10 Sit Ups
10 Ring Pulls
5 Pull ups

Did I mention that was the warm up? haha… I actually got into the groove pretty easily and the stretches felt awesome. I was terrified to try the pull ups at first. I climbed up on the box and used some huge bands to help, along with one of the trainers helping support my foot. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Rogue.

The rest of the class was doing the Fight Gone (not so) Bad WOD, which included box jumps. Let’s be honest, those terrify me. I just picture myself face slamming the box as I attempt to jump. We’ll see… haha

Then we moved on to our WOD, basically what he called the Baseline:

For Time:
500m Row
40 Squats
30 Sit ups
20 Push ups
10 Ring Pulls

I finished in 5:21. I actually felt pretty great about it!

Overall it was a great first experience.

No Regrets here! I even went back this morning (at 5am) for more!

Today included warm up:

10 Squats
10 Second Squat Stretch
10 Push Ups
5 Pull ups
10 Lunges
5 Inch Worms

For strength I learned the deadlift. I did 3 rounds of 5 reps at 65#.

WOD:
14 min AMRAP
1000m Row
10 deadlift 65#
60 reps single jump rope

I finished the row in a little under 5 minutes and had about 9 minutes to do AMRAP on the deadlift/jumprope. I did 3 rounds of each… the jump rope was so hard after that row! I could barely get my feet to leave the ground.

    CrossFit looks so hard! I have not tried it, but am super impressed by all of you out there doing it!

      The great thing about it is that it is totally scalable to your level! Everyone else was Deadlifting 100+ pounds today… I stuck with 65!

    Awesome job! I went into CrossFit last year, not knowing ANYTHING about it. At all. My first day I saw my friend lift these massive weights over her head. My jaw dropped and then it was my turn at the “into class”. I was sore for literally days upon days… lol I’m kinda glad I went in blindly.

    AmyC: CrossFit isn’t “hard” unless you want it to be. You’re not doing the same weight as everyone in the class. You’re working with what you can. So depending on the WOD you may lift heavier/lighter than usual. It’s all about your own level of fitness, they accommodate to you.

    I LOVE CROSSFIT!! lol

      Oh wow, How did you find out about it without “knowing” about it? If I went in blindly I probably would have turned around and walked out. At least I sorta knew what I was getting myself into. I told my husband I didn’t want to try it because I knew I’d be hooked. And I am pretty sure I am.

    Great job! I have tried one box. The people were super cool and supportive, but I wasn’t feeling it with the trainer. I should have gone back (as they rotate trainers through out the week). but haven’t.

    However, soon I will be attending a new box. Super excited to push my limits. ;)

    Congrats on your first couple of WODs! I love seeing people going into it with a positive attitude. Also working out with a spouse is AWESOME, it’s fun to break down the workout afterwards and be like, did you see me do xyz?! It’s a time for me and my husband to bond and cheer for each other.

      We haven’t been able to go together yet (we have to take turns staying home with the kiddo) but we like going over things afterwards… and competing against each other!
